The Five: 5 Ways to Stay on Top of Your Game - and new Online Coaching Program

There’s no doubt that esthetics is a growing industry. In 2021 experts estimate that the total revenue in the Beauty & Personal Care market will reach $82,264 million.

The beauty market is also expected to grow with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.1% in the period 2021–2025, reaching an overall revenue of $96,449 million in 2025.

In the United States alone, the beauty services sector employs over 670,000 people, and its job growth outlook is “faster than average” according to BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) data at a rate of 13% (2016-2026). According to a study, it was worth $532.43 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach a market value of $805.61 billion by 2023.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has said that positions are growing at 17% between 2019 and 2029.

But while esthetics grows, the average career lifespan of an esthetician is typically only 1-3 years, according to Zippia Careers, in their estimate of demographics and statistics for licensed estheticians in the United States. Growing and sustaining a successful career in this industry is less about skill and all about mindset. We’ve listed 5 ways we believe can help you be one of the long-term career winners.

1. Niche yourself: Do what you love to do, what you do best – specialize! You don’t have to know or offer every treatment out there. In fact, the narrower and more specific your niche, the easier it is to direct your business, make decisions, decide where to allocate resources and market. It makes answering the question - "What do you do?" – a simple “elevator speech” that will pique their interest and make them want to learn more about you.

2. Take consistent action: A goal without action is just a dream so the saying goes. You are in charge of your career, so you need to set your goals and follow through. It’s not enough to set goals or make decisions – you must see those goals and decisions through with consistent, daily action.

3. Persistence: Growing your business or your clientele working for someone else takes time. There’s no way to get around it. You’ll make mistakes, you’ll get derailed from time to time. Don’t take it personally. You chose esthetics for a reason – it’s your passion (we hope!). Keep going. The fun is in the journey anyway, not the destination.

4. Keep learning: Continuing education is a must – not optional! It’s how you stay heads above the competition, provide the best services to your clients, and evolve. (see this month’s review on Inner Beauty Growth, below).

5. Standout: The more people know and talk about you, the less you have to market! Your clients should be your advertisers, spreading positive reviews and referrals. Make sure you’re doing something worth advertising! Don’t miss an opportunity to showcase your expertise on social media, blogging, YouTube videos, or podcasting.
